According to the story narrated by Evliya Çelebi, one winter day, Sultan Bayezid II was hunting on the hills of Galata when he came across an exceptionally well-kept, large garden. Inside was a small, old hut. He decided to take a break there and met the owner, known as Gül Baba for his beautiful rose cultivation. Impressed by both the conversation and Gül Baba’s dedication to his garden, the Sultan wanted to reward him and asked about his wish. In response, Gül Baba picked one yellow and one red rose and gave them to the Sultan, requesting the establishment of a school in the garden. Sultan Bayezid II honored his promise. In the year 1481, a school was built on the designated spot. Named the Galata Sarayı Hümayûn Mektebi, the school has since produced some of the most esteemed individuals in our country.
